Should Laurie Glanfield Retire?

See my post on the attempt to shift "old" employees at the Law Reform Commission because they are over 40 and been in the same job for 10 years or so. That is "good logic"! So applying that "logic" it follows that Mr Glanfield should retire immediately as Director General of the Department of Justice and Attorney General -- he is over 50 and held the same job since 1991.

Disability Sector vs NSW Trustee and Guardian

One of the leading disability advocacy organisations is People With Disability. Their latest bulletin points out the problems with the creation of the NSW Trustee and Guardian. They state in the bulletin:

"The Government has also agreed to establish a Parliamentary Inquiry into the legislation, although at this stage it is not clear what this inquiry will encompass. PWD proposed such an inquiry as essential work to be done before the Bill was enacted into law. Now that the Bill has been enacted it is difficult to have confidence that such an Inquiry will have any real impact.
PWD will continue to seek reform to these oppressive laws and practices, and to publicly expose their impact on persons with disability. We will be working with our advocacy colleagues to make this a major State election issue for March 2011, and will ensure that the issues are brought before the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities when Australia reports to the Committee in 2010. For further information contact Therese Sands, Executive Director, on the numbers below or by email at Thereses@pwd.org.au"

This is an important election issue for 2011, get mobilised today!

NSW Trustee and Guardian

How did the NSW Labor Government succeed in having the NSW Trustee and Guardian bill passed last June? The picture puzzle about dirty tactics behind the scenes is starting to become clearer.

Mr Hatzistergos' "Strange" Merger

A brouhaha is brewing about the recent actions of the NSW State Government in its merger of two small agencies inside the Attorney Generals Department: Public Trustee NSW and Office of the Protective Commissioner.

Tony Boyd of the Business Spectator has written "Would You Trust NSW?" a scathing commentary on what he argues is a poorly planned merger of two organizations serving different members of the public. Boyd says:

"The deal looks headed down the same path as many failed corporate mergers that put short term financial objectives ahead of long-term planning." (See it here).

Looks like the whole state government is in a mess if this merger is any litmus test!

John Hatzistergos vs Human Rights

John Hatzistergos is the NSW Attorney General. He is the chief law officer of NSW. Why does he oppose the introduction of a bill of rights in Australia? Is he afraid that politicians might find themselves accountable before the Courts? Why is his political philosophy about human rights law so misguided?
